Although Shinagawa is another pretty businessmen-y area in Tokyo, there are a few things to do there that’s fun for kids. Apart from the Epson Aquarium, the Shinagawa Aquarium and viewing the shinkansen at JR Shinagawa station, older kids might enjoy going to the Shinagawa Bowling Center, inside Prince Hotel and there are also a couple of jidoukans (which are under Minato-ku website, not Shinagawa-ku) within walking distance from Shinagawa Station – Takanawa Children’s Hall and Konan Children’s Hall. Konan Chidlren’s Hall is about a 10 minute walk from the Konan Exit of the Station (towards Atre and Intercity). There are possibly more jidoukans in the area, but I couldn’t find any address listings on the Shinagawa-ku homepage. Shinagawa area has a variety of options for lunch or snack time. There’s T.G.I. Fridays, near the Prince Hotel across the street from Takanawaguchi Exit. There’s a few buffet restaurants inside the Prince Hotel. Near the Konan exit there is Atre with all the New York City theme restaurants, although a bit on the fancier-side than the kid-friendly side. Towards Shinagawa Intercity there are also many restaurants to choose from. A pretty reasonable and kid-friendly spot is Bamiyan, a Chinese family restaurant. Apart from booth seats and an actual separate smoking dining area, they have a drink “buffet” for 180 yen if you order any dish (even a 180 yen almond jelly dessert). If you are brining a bento, there is an outdoor “free space” with tables and chairs a few feet past the McDonald’s across from the Takanawaguchi Exit. There are also places to sit in the green courtyard between the Intercity building and Shinagawa Station. And of course you can always eat your lunch at the jidoukans between 12-1pm. For the mother’s coffee break, there is a Dean and Deluca (which I have to admit makes me a bit nostalgic since I used to work across the street from one for 6 years) where they have a few tables and chairs. Towards Takanawa jidoukan there is Tullys, which only has outdoor seating (a nice option when weather is more pleasant). And if the kids are still not tired enough, inside the Intercity building and in the park area below are also more open spaces for kids to just run around to get out that energy, while moms can rest on one of the many benches or chairs.
