Shinkansen Viewing

Shinagawa JR Station 品川駅

So today Keiji finally got a closeup look at the shinkansen 新幹線しんかんせん (bullet trains). We were at Shinagawa station and decided to buy the viewing ticket (I think its called nyujyoken kippu)for only 130 yen. That allows you to just stand on the platform and watch the shinkansen come and go. An hour went by so fast and it totally entertained the kids. We could’ve easily stayed longer if we weren’t getting hungry. It sounded so strange to just stand on the platform to watch shinkansen but it must be popular if they even have this ticket option from the machine. And from what I have sen so far, there are a lot of shinkansen fans – not just boys but grown men as well. The boys were holding onto the bars gawking at the Series 700 train which was in the platform across us, when a nice attendant came from out of no where to advise us to stand behind the yellow line because when the shinkansen pass by they run as fast as 150 km per hour. That’s pretty fast.

I think I might be turning into a shinkansen fan myself, being brainwashed by Keiji’s ever-so contaminating excitement when he yells “LOOK! SHINKANSEN!” every time he sees one zoom by. But I’ll just keep that a little secret. Next time we’ll check out the trains from Tokyo station. They’ll have em all there since it’s the home base!
